South Africa beat Argentina 29-10 in a dour Round Two of the 2021 Rugby Championship at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Gqeberha.

South Africa went top of the Rugby Championship table with another comfortable victory against a blunt, ill-disciplined Argentina, although the All Blacks and Australia did not play this round.

Makazole Mapimpi and Malcolm Marx dotted down for the Boks, while Pablo Matera got the Pumas’ only try in two Tests versus the Boks.

Like the British & Irish Lions, or all those that came before them, the Pumas could not find a way through the ‘Boring’ Boks.

It took until the 86th-minute, six minutes after the hooter, for Argentina to cross South Africa’s goal line.

Handré Pollard added the rest of the defending champions’ points from the tee.

The 27-year-old World Cup-winner kicked five penalties and two conversions for a match haul of 19 points.

The only down side for the Boks was seeing Trevor Nyakane limp off early on, and last week’s super sub Jaden Hendrikse leave the field on a stretcher late in the game.

Pollard, perfect from the kicking tee, put South Africa 15-3 up as the Springboks took a deserved but ugly 12-point halftime lead.

Domingo Miotti, in at first receiver for Nicolás Sanchez, added a lone 24th-minute penalty to get Argentina off the mark.

Miotti missed penalties either side of the break before Willie Le Roux put Mapimpi away on 46 minutes.

Marx was soon in on the act. The hooker flopped over on 52 minutes from another bulldozing driving maul to increase the lead.

Pollard converted both to give the World’s number one ranked team an unasailable 29-3 lead going into the last quarter.

The South African flyhalf’s only mistake, however, was not finding touch in the corner with a last-minute penalty, which cost the Boks a last shot at a bonus point.

With both teams searching for the final try, the game opened up. eventually, Matera crashed through to end the game.

Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber made wholesale changes to the team for this second Rugby Championship clash

Lood de Jager ran out for his 50th cap, while Marvin Orie earned his first Test start, and the uncapped Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg made his debut off the bench in the second stanza.

De Jager was awarded the Player of the Match for another big game.

Nienaber made 11 changes from last week’s 32-12 win – six in the backline and five upfront, and it worked a treat. In all, 17 changes were made to the matchday squad.

Siya Kolisi, Jasper Wiese, Cobus Reinach, and De Jager were the only players to begin last week’s match.

Mario Ledesma also decided to rotate his squad, only the midfield pairing, front row and two of the three loose forwards started in their same positions as last Saturday.

Ledesma also made two positional switches. Only Santiago Chocobares and Jeronimo de la Fuente remained from last week.

Santiago Carreras moved from fullback to left wing, while Bautista Delguy, Matias Moroni (injured), Sanchez, and Felipe Ezcurra dropped out of the starting XV.

They were replaced by Juan Cruz Mallía at fullback, the uncapped Ignacio Mendy at right wing, Miotti at flyhalf, and Gonzalo Bertranou at scrumhalf. Sanchez and Ezcurra made the bench.

Upfront, Facundo Isa dropped out of the match-day squad while Marcos Kremer moved to the bench. Guido Petti swapped from lock to flank.

Tomas Lavanini and Matias Alemanno began in the boiler room.

Last week’s front row of Francisco Gomez Kodela, Julian Montoya and Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro, as well as No.8 Rodrigo Bruni and flanker Pablo Matera, retained their places in the starting team.

South Africa take control of the half through solid scrummaging, dominating the breakdown and winning the aerial battle

The first half was a dour affair. Both teams conceded too many penalties.

Ledesma’s men struggled, they gave away 13 penalties to the opposition’s six in the first stanza as the Boks opened up a two-score lead.

Pollard kicked three penalties as the Boks took a slender 9-0 lead just after the first quarter.

The first three came after several offside penalties by Argentina kept the home nation out.

Eventually, Siya Kolisi opted for the posts. The second came from a dominant Bok scrum in front of the posts, the third after another series of offsides inside the Pumas’ 22.

Miotti pulled three back soon afterwards to put the South Americans on the scoreboard after 24 minutes.

But South Africa’s maul began to come together, one way to stop the set-piece is at source; however, not by taking out De Jager in the air.

Pollard’s fourth goal increased his side’s lead to 12-3 on the half-hour as the World Champions began to assert control.

Rodrigo Bruni got sin-binned for another cynical Pumas play, and Pollard made them pay when he added another penalty.

The Springboks should have had a chance to increase their lead before halftime.

A bizarre TMO call, however, chalked off a kickable penalty in front of the posts.

TMO Tom Foley did his best Marius Jonker by ruling that Lukhanyo Am tackled Juan Cruz Mallía high and dangerously.

It gave the Pumas a shot at claiming some late points, but Miotti could land his long-range penalty.

Springboks come out flying after the break as the Pumas fade

The 25-year-old Pumas flyhalf also missed an early second half goal, which proved costly because the Boks struck soon afterwards.

Another powerful driving maul ended with try machine Mapimpi walking over in the corner for his fourth try against Los Pumas.

A sustained attack ended with Willie Le Roux sending the flyer away with a well-timed draw and pass.

Pollard added the touchline conversion to make it 22-3 after 47 minutes.

Marx powered over moments later as the Bok pack began to grind down the opposition. Pollard again converted to increase the advantage to 26 points.

The Boks started to squeeze a tiring opposition, who continued to stray offside inside their 22; it allowed South Africa to chase the bonus-point.

Argentina did not help themselves either, knocking on with the try line at their mercy.

The Boks began to take their foot off the gas allowing the South Americans some opportunities to build on their three points.

Tomas Lavanini was sent to the bin but this did not hamper his team, who found a way to score with 14 rather than 15 players.

Argentina could not breach the green and gold wall until mistakes by the Boks, chasing the bonus point, led to Matera barging over next to the sticks.

SANZAAR confirm schedule for Rugby Championship | Latest Rugby News | Wallabies Rugby

sanzaar-confirm-schedule-for-rugby-championship-latest-rugby-news-wallabies-rugby.jpg

SANZAAR has confirmed the schedule for the Rugby Championship with the tournament set to be played in Queensland.

The matches will be played as double-headers across four straight weekends across Brisbane, Gold Coast and Townsville.

Click here to be the first to access tickets when on sale for the eToro Rugby Championship at 3pm AEST Wednesday 1 September

This comes as Rugby Australia confirms the third Bledisloe Test will be played in Perth, set to be played Sunday September 5 at 4pm (AEST)

Following this, the Wallabies will face South Africa on Sunday September 12 at Cbus Super Stadium, with the All Blacks taking on Argentina.

The sides will then head to Suncorp on September 18, before the action heads to Townsville a week later as Australia faces Argentina.

This will double as the centurion match between the All Blacks and Springboks, with the series set to end on October 2 on the Gold Coast.

Ticketholders for the previously scheduled matches in Sydney, Newcastle and Canberra will be refunded.

“This is a world Rugby first and a truly special celebration of the game, in what I see as a once-in-a-lifetime event. We can't thank Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk enough, as well as Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young and John Lee of the Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport and their respective departments for their support in making this tournament possible," RA CEO Andy Marinos said in a statement.

“What a fantastic tournament ahead for fans in Queensland. Four unmissable back-to-back double-headers featuring four of the very best Test nations in World Rugby – all in Queensland’s backyard.

“I also want to acknowledge our partners including Nine, Stan, Cadbury, eToro as well as Rugby Australia’s partners for their support, as we showcase the very best of Queensland and Australia to the rest of the world next month.

“I extend our gratitude to the New South Wales Government and the ACT Government for their understanding in rescheduling the fixtures set for Sydney, Newcastle and Canberra. We hope everyone stays safe and we look forward to bringing world-class Rugby to fans right across the country next year."

Hooper leads from the front

With speculation rift the games would be moved to Europe, Marinos told reporters the preference was always keeping the games within the region, putting the delay down to sorting out quarantine measures for South Africa and Argentina.

"When we looked at the construct of the Rugby Championship this year, it was always going to be held between Australia and New Zealand and when New Zealand's position changed because of the COVID-19 outbreak, Australia remained the preferred option," Marinos said.

"So I think everyone just believed that we needed to close that loop before we looked at anything else.

“We really had confirmation of the match schedule a couple of days ago, it was getting this managed isolation piece sorted literally minutes before our SANZAAR call last night we got the confirmation from the Premier’s office and the DG.

“It was very welcome news and well received by our SANZAAR partners. Getting the Queensland solution through was the preferred position of the SANZAAR CEO’s and it’s a delight to get it through.

“It’s a real good opportunity for Queensland and Rugby in Australia.”

Tickets will go on sale Wednesday September 1 at 3pm for the four double-headers across the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Townsville via Ticketek and Ticketmaster.

Rugby Australia has this afternoon confirmed that the third Bledisloe cup match, initially re-scheduled for this Saturday (August 28) in Perth, will now be played at Optus Stadium on September 5.

Speaking earlier in the week, Rugby AU chief executive Andy Marinos was optimistic the match would still be played in Perth, with a statement this afternoon ratifying this belief.

Click here to be the first to access tickets when on sale for the eToro Rugby Championship at 3pm AEST Wednesday 1 September

Scheduled for a 2pm WST/4pm AEST kick-off, the match is being touted as one for the fans, with the Sunday afternoon kick-off set to marry up perfectly with Father’s Day.

“There are very limited tickets still available, so make sure you don’t miss out as there is no better way to celebrate Father’s Day than to cheer on the Wallabies at a packed house at Optus Stadium”. The Rugby AU CEO said in a statement on Thursday afternoon.

Marinos was also quick to praise the West Australian Government and stadium staff for their solution-orientated approach to the situation.

“It’s fantastic on all fronts to have the opportunity for the Wallabies to play at this iconic stadium again and entertain the Perth public that has embraced them so warmly over the past two weeks,” Marinos added.

“From speaking with the Wallabies team, they are desperate to put on a great show for the Perth community – and confirming this Test is great news for them and the fans in Western Australia.”

“We look forward to welcoming the All Blacks to Australia for this match, which is the start of a Rugby celebration in our country. There are very limited tickets still available, so make sure you don’t miss out as there is no better way to celebrate Father’s Day than to cheer on the Wallabies at a packed house at Optus Stadium”.

In an added boost for West Australian’s, Marinos confirmed that ticketholders to the existing match would be able to transfer their tickets with 2000 remaining on public sale.

“For any ticketholder that had purchased for the previous date, your ticket be automatically transferred to the new date. If you now can’t make it, you will be offered the opportunity for a full refund,”

The Wallabies hope that their first home fixture of the eToro Rugby Championship will turn around their campaign, having lost their opening TRC match to New Zealand.

New Zealand named their squad for what they described as a 'mammoth tour' earlier today, while Argentina and South Africa will arrive in Australia for the TRC over the weekend.

James Lowe back in action

james-lowe-back-in-action.jpg

Former Tasman and Chiefs wing James Lowe has recovered from the hamstring injury that ended his last season prematurely and looking forward to getting back into action with his Leinster club.

Lowe, 29, a four-time Maori All Black, who played 53 games for the Chiefs and 46 for Tasman, played six Tests for Ireland last year before tearing a hamstring that resulted in him missing Ireland's summer Tests against Japan and the United States.

He said the injury was one where he could have made it a lot worse if he'd kept trying.

"It took a lot longer to recover from. It was one of those ones where I really wanted to get back but, by being a little bit naïve it did me more damage than good," he told the Irish Independent.

"I just had to stamp it out and say: 'Look, you're not going to be playing for the rest of the season'. Once I'd accepted that it healed a lot quicker.

"I'm back, fully fit. I'm running around and getting flogged. We're ready to rumble," he said.

Enforced rest ensured he was prepared for the new season, and he said he felt sorry for those players involved in the British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa.

"The tour wasn't what everyone was expecting by any means, but the fact they played rugby for almost a year consistently is something no body should be used to," he said.

While it had been tough on them he was impressed with the contribution his Leinster teammates Robbie Henshaw, Jack Conan and Tadhg Furlong made to the effort.

"Everyone from Leinster put their hand up during the series," he said.

Lowe said he had been enthralled by the series, but saw it as a missed opportunity for the Lions.

"There are some trends that will come out of it. South Africa played to their strengths.

"They've got some of the biggest humans in the world in that forward pack. The Lions forward pack didn't roll over by any means, but the South Africans have a game-plan, and they stuck to it.

"I don't think the game of rugby will lean towards that, it's based on the personnel that you have," he said.

"It wasn't champagne rugby, but it was a Test series we were all glued to," he said.

All Blacks embark on a tour like no other

all-blacks-embark-on-a-tour-like-no-other.jpg

Embarking on what he described as a tour like no other in the professional era, reappointed All Blacks coach Ian Foster has four or five months on a logistical tightrope ahead of him while steering the All Blacks through a rigorous campaign of 10 Tests in 12 weeks.

Preparing plans to deal with the different challenges offered by playing Australia, Argentina and the world champions South Africa in the Fortinet Rugby Championship would be the normal requirement.

But throw in the extra demands of the centenary Test and a northern hemisphere trip, Foster has unprecedented permutations caused by Covid-19 to plot.

Central to the demands is the absence of key players first five-eighths Richie Mo'unga, halfback Aaron Smith and lock Sam Whitelock on paternity leave. Hooker Dane Coles is also on injury recovery. All of them are uncertain when they can join the side, probably during their Queensland stint.

There is also the need to name a new captain, something he preferred to announce once they were in Perth and preparing for Sunday's Test. That would allow them to discuss plans with the leadership group in that environment.

"It's been an eventful 12 months with captains," he said.

"Firstly, Sam Cane with his injury, then Sam Whitelock's come in. and he's done a fantastic job. So with him not being there, we've also had Aaron Smith this year when Sammy wasn't playing early in the year, and Aaron's not there, so it has tested our depth in that regard. But we've got a lot of confidence in our leadership plan. The work done by Gilbert with our leaders has been outstanding in the last 12 months.

"We know who we want. We wanted to get over to Perth and create some energy by having those conversations once we're over there," he said.

Foster said while there was a lot of talk about meeting the Springboks for the first time since the Rugby World Cup, there was a Test against Australia first. Then two Tests against Argentina. There were unknowns about when the senior players could join the side and what their quarantine requirements were.

"We'd prefer to have all our experienced players on deck but this is a chance to grow a bit of depth by necessity," he said.

They had known for some time players would not be available due to the arrival of babies. But, in normal circumstances, that would have occurred when Tests were played in New Zealand.

"We're massively supportive of the decisions they've made for their families," Foster said.

"I know the team is 100 per cent behind them…and I know they're very keen to jump on a plane as soon as they can. It's been difficult saying goodbye to them, but the reality is that's what we have to do in these times.

"Everyone has had to say goodbye to families. But, overall, we're very excited about it, and we know when we get to Perth, we can settle down and address the challenges ahead one by one.

Foster said the decision to take only Beauden Barrett and Damian McKenzie as the first five-eighths was made in the likelihood Mo'unga would join the side sooner rather than later. Had they taken another player, there was a chance they would not get a lot of play, and they would have to stay with the side for 15 weeks. Should Mo'unga's arrival be delayed, they would look again at that decision, he said.

Cane was another expected to make a belated appearance with the side.

Foster said had they still been in New Zealand, Cane's path back to playing would have been through the Bunnings NPC with the Steamers but, now, with the uncertainty of when that was going to start, the quarantine factor into Queensland became an issue.

"We can't crystal ball gaze into everything so we will probably make those decisions in two or three weeks."

It was comparable to the situation with props Joe Moody and Ofa Tuungafasi. The preference would have been to have them playing provincial rugby before joining them, but if they hadn't gone with the All Blacks on Thursday, they would have faced two weeks in quarantine, so it made more sense to take them, he said.

It becomes a case of tallying up government regulations and quarantine rules between the two countries and when the players can travel. That left quite a few things out of the All Blacks' control.

"If we ended up with five or six injuries of players who couldn't play any more then we're going to get stressed or stretched in terms of that number.

"We've got a balancing act here, it's partly why we're going with 35. It would have been easier to go with more but, clearly, we've got four guys we would have wanted on the plane that couldn't come for other reasons, and then there's another three or four we'd like to add at some stage depending on circumstances. Four or five Tests without any injuries would be very nice," he said.

Change at the helm for Black Ferns Sevens

change-at-the-helm-for-black-ferns-sevens.jpg

After 10 years involved in the Black Ferns Sevens programme, the gold-medal winning Olympic campaign will be the last for Co-Coach Allan Bunting who is stepping down from his role.

Co-Coach Cory Sweeney will take the helm of the team, with an exciting 12 months approaching that includes the Commonwealth Games and Rugby World Cup Sevens in 2022.

Bunting joined the Black Ferns Sevens during the Go4Gold campaign in 2012 and took the role of Head Coach of the team after the Rio Olympics.

He has been part of two World Cup wins, an inaugural Commonwealth Games gold, two Olympic campaigns and six World Series wins. He oversaw the team that went on a 50-match winning streak in 2018/2019.

Cory Sweeney has been part of the Black Ferns Sevens set up for five years, joining Bunting as Co-Coach at the start of the 2019-2020 season.

New Zealand Rugby’s CEO Mark Robinson thanked Bunting for his dedication to the Black Ferns Sevens.

“The contribution Allan has made to the Black Ferns Sevens is immense. His leadership and mana will no doubt have a lasting effect on all the players who have gone through the programme and his legacy speaks for itself. We know he has plenty more to contribute to the game and look forward to his next endeavours.

“We’re excited that Cory has signed on to lead the Black Ferns Sevens through the next Olympic cycle. Cory is highly respected and has all the qualities to lead the programme to more success,” said Robinson.

Allan Bunting said he felt blessed to have been involved in the programme for the past decade.

“I have a real feeling of fulfilment, we have achieved everything we set out to in the past five years, I feel like I have served my purpose and now its time for me to spend more time with my family.”

Allan Bunting

“I have worked with such amazing people, built relationships that will last for life and shared some amazing experiences. Seeing the growth of the players both on and off the field has been really special.

"I know that the team is in great hands with Cory taking charge and I'm looking forward to seeing what they continue to achieve," said Bunting.

Cory Sweeney acknowledged his good friend, Bunting, and said it had been a privilege to work alongside him over the past five years.

“He has had a massive impact on this programme and has inspired these players to be and succeed the way they have.

“It’s a real honour to take on this team and continue to the next pinnacle event. The foundations have been laid, we will go away and redefine our purpose for what the next few years look like.”

Cory Sweeney

“If you look at the team we had in Tokyo, then we have a layer of players that have been developing over the past few years and a group of players coming out of school who are incredible athletes, it’s pretty exciting looking ahead at this next cycle,” said Sweeney.

The remainder of the coaching group will be confirmed in the coming months.

Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi joins Crusaders roster for 2022 season

Former Chiefs halfback, Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi, is set to join the Crusaders next season, having signed with the club for their 2022 Super Rugby campaign.

The 26-year-old, who has three Test caps to his name and plays his provincial rugby with Bay of Plenty, said he looks forward to the challenge of a new environment down in Christchurch.

“I’m really grateful for the opportunity to join a club that has such an awesome track record in Super Rugby, and it’s exciting to have the chance to contribute to a team like the Crusaders,” Tahuriorangi said.

“I worked with Razor a few years back as part of the New Zealand Under 20s programme, so I’m looking forward to reconnecting with him next season and embracing a fresh challenge in my rugby career.”

Crusaders Head Coach Scott Robertson said Tahuriorangi completes a competitive trio of halfbacks in the 2022 squad.

“I was really impressed by Te Toiroa during our 2015 Junior World Championship campaign, he was a big part of our success that year and we're looking forward to getting the best out of him next season,” Robertson said.

“I know he’s prepared to come down here and compete for a spot which is hugely exciting, and we look forward to welcoming him into our whānau.”

Scott Robertson

After representing New Zealand at the 2015 World Rugby Under 20 Championship, Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi was named in the New Zealand Barbarians team to play the Māori All Blacks later that year. He debuted for the Hurricanes in 2016, playing for the Wellington-based Super Rugby side 10 times before moving to the Chiefs in 2018.

The Rotorua-born halfback was selected in the Māori All Blacks team to play the British and Irish Lions in 2017, and travelled with the side on their Northern Hemisphere tour. Tahuriorangi became All Black #1174 in 2018 when he made his debut against Argentina in Nelson, and went on to play Tests against Japan and Italy.

Stalemate sends Griquas through to Carling Currie Cup semis

The Peacock Blues struggled to get their hands on the ball and were made to work extremely hard in the first half. A yellow card only added to the energy-sapping defensive work that had to be done, which they did with aplomb to trail by just 5-3 at half-time.

They remained under pressure in the second half, but their conditioning and fighting spirit kept them in the contest and allowed them to snatch a draw to finish the league phase in third place and therefore seal their spot in the semifinals.

The Lowvelders will be kicking themselves as they dominated territory and possession, had ascendency in the set pieces and turned down a kickable penalty in the 77th minute. They are now in danger of losing out on the playoffs to fifth-placed DHL Western Province, who will advance if they’re able to topple the Cell C Sharks in Durban this evening.

George Whitehead scored the first points of the game in the fourth minute, sending a penalty goal sailing through the uprights after opposite number Eddie Fouché went off his feet at a ruck.

Fouché made amends with a brilliant kick off the left foot to put his team in the attacking 22, where captain Pieter van Vuuren poached the lineout. Under-fire Tafel Lager Griquas conceded a string of penalties, which led to Adre Smith being sin-binned in the 12th minute.

Crucially, the New Nation Pumas failed to get on the board in the 10-minute period they had a man advantage. The hosts earned immediate relief through a scrum penalty and escaped another precarious situation when they secured a maul turnover from a lineout.

Mox Mxoli on the drive for Griquas.

The New Nation Pumas pounced on a turnover as brilliant hands saw replacement Tapiwa Mafura dot down in the corner in the 27th minute. It went upstairs as Chris Hollis had done well to try to force Mafura into touch, but the try stood. Fouché couldn’t add the touchline conversion.

Champion of the Match Shane Kirkwood thought he was in for the visitors’ second moments later, but his try was disallowed by TMO Ben Crouse for an earlier foot in touch. Whitehead missed an opportunity to regain the lead in the 36th minute after Marné Coetzee was caught coming in from the side and after a real arm-wrestle of a first half, the New Nation Pumas held a two-point lead.

Fouché again pinned the hosts in the 22 with an excellent touch-finder to start the second half, with Kirkwood working the lineout steal this time around. Tafel Lager Griquas were quick to concede and penalty and Fouché stepped up to make it 8-3 after 44 minutes.

Momentum was well and truly with the New Nation Pumas and Erich Cronje looked to have scored, however, the try was disallowed as the ball had gone forward from Daniel Maartens’ rip at the ruck.

Whitehead kicked a second penalty goal against the run of play before the visitors got their elusive second try when Sebastián de Klerk handed off a couple of defenders to score in the 53rd minute. Fouché was unable to make it a two-score game but the New Nation Pumas had their tails up at 13-6.

Fouché lined up another kick at goal into the strong wind in the 64th minute. This time, his radar was working but his kick dropped just short.

With time running out, Whitehead was the clutch player Tafel Lager Griquas needed. The flyhalf fed Hollis with a good short ball that saw the big centre power over for the try, with Whitehead slotting the crucial conversion to level the scores in the 73rd minute.

Curiously, the New Nation Pumas opted not to kick at goal when they were awarded a penalty with three minutes remaining, a decision they may well rue as they coughed up the ball after well over 10 phases as the game ended in a draw.

Scorers:

Tafel Lager Griquas 13 (3) – Try: Chris Hollis. Conversion: George Whitehead. Penalty goals: Whitehead (2).

New Nation Pumas 13 (5) – Tries: Tapiwa Mafura, Sebastián de Klerk. Penalty goal: Eddie Fouché.

Italy, Ireland starts for SA teams in United Rugby Championships

The South African focus will then shift to Ireland, where the Vodacom Bulls and Cell C Sharks are starting their campaigns on Saturday, 25 September with the Vodacom Bulls facing Leinster in Dublin and Munster awaiting Cell C Sharks in Limerick.

The URC revealed all 144 regular season matchups as South Africa’s top sides take to the field against the Celtic and Italian nations in a global first for rugby. Building upon rivalry created during the British & Irish Lions Series, the Cell C Sharks, DHL Stormers, Emirates Lions and Vodacom Bulls now take the pitch in iconic locations against the best of Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales across 18 rounds of action.

The South African teams will complete four-week tours of Europe to begin the season giving fans in Ireland, Italy, Wales and Scotland an early opportunity to see these new sides in person.

SA Rugby CEO, Jurie Roux, said the announcement of the fixtures starts an exciting time for South African rugby as part of the strategic migration to the north in the same time zones.

"It is great to announce how and where we are playing, how the new formats will work and what teams we are playing. It will not be an easy start as we need to learn to play in the northern hemisphere conditions against very good sides. We have huge respect for our new opponents and with the fixtures out, we can start preparing in all earnest for the challenges ahead. It will be tough playing away, but we want to make this work even though we are in pandemic."

Roux is hopeful that when the return fixtures are due, South Africa will be off the red list and that the northern teams will be able to play in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town respectively.

Seabelo Senatla of the DHL Stormers.

In the new format all 16 teams will be ranked across a single table which will rewards the top eight teams with their places in an expanded Final Series which includes a full Quarter-final stage, followed by Semi-finals before the best two teams meet in the URC Grand Final in June.

Martin Anayi, United Rugby Championship CEO, said: “We believe these fixtures will ensure that the URC could deliver on its promise of a new era for our league where the very best from South Africa go head-to-head with our Celtic and Italian teams.

“As we carefully manoeuvre out of the pandemic, the URC will take its place as one of the leading leagues in global rugby and this fixture list should ignite our competition and take it to the next level.

“This schedule is the most complex we have ever produced and the efforts of every one of our stakeholders to help us piece it together in the current climate have been monumental. We now have a format that will heighten competition, showcase our clubs, elevate our athletes and bring great excitement to fans and TV audiences right across our territories and beyond.”

The Round One Fixtures are: (with SA kick-off times)

Springboks touch down in Brisbane

springboks-touch-down-in-brisbane.jpg

The team made the journey from Nelson Mandela Bay to Cape Town on Thursday before flying to Brisbane overnight on a charter flight with the Argentinean side, and both teams will be in quarantine for the next 14 days before the opening round of matches on Sunday, 12 September.

The Springboks will start their tour with a fixture against Australia at the CBUS Super Stadium in Gold Coast, which will be followed by another match-up between the teams at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday, 18 September.

They will then face New Zealand on Saturday, 25 September, at QLD Country Bank Stadium in Townsville and on Saturday, 2 October, at the CBUS Super Stadium in Gold Coast.

“We are excited to be in Australia and to begin our preparations for the away leg of the Castle Lager Rugby Championship,” said Nienaber. “The players had a few days off in Nelson Mandela Bay to rest and recuperate after the Castle Lager Lions Series, two Tests against Argentina and one against Georgia, and they are keen to get back onto the field to do the groundwork for the Tests against Australia and New Zealand.

“The time zone and conditions are obviously different to that which we experienced in South Africa, so getting acclimatised and settled in as quickly as possible will be vital.

“Fortunately, we are allowed training during specific times of the day while we are in quarantine, and we need to make the most of those sessions to ensure that we hit the ground running in our opening Test.”

The team will get their tour programme underway with COVID-19 tests on Saturday and will participate in gym and off-field conditioning sessions over the weekend to prepare them for a demanding training week starting on Monday.

“We have two weeks to adapt and settle in, and the team realises the importance of using this time wisely to get ready for the challenging run of matches ahead both mentally and physically as we attempt to defend our Castle Lager Rugby Championship title,” said Nienaber.

“We are playing against Australia in back-to-back matches on their home patch with supporters in the stadiums – which is something we haven’t experienced since the Rugby World Cup final in 2019 - and then we face the task of playing two Tests in a row against New Zealand.

“So, we are under no illusions about the challenge that awaits us.

“That said, we have achieved rewarding results so far this season with the structures and systems we have in place, and the sooner we get back into swing of things, the better prepared we will be when we take the field.”

Chris Dry retires from international Sevens

Dry made his debut in 2010 in Adelaide, Australia, and went on to represent the Springbok Sevens team in 74 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series tournaments, which featured 373 matches for his country, while he scored 98 tries.

Dry also represented South Africa at the Rugby World Cup Sevens, won gold with the team at the Commonwealth Games and earned a fifth placed finish for Team South Africa in Rugby Sevens at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. He is also a two-time gold medal winner in the World Series with the Blitzboks, and made the World Series Dream team in 2017.

“As a competitive rugby player, you always believe you have one more season in you, but it is time to step away from the game that gave me so much over the last decade and more,” said Dry.

“Age did become a factor; it is harder and harder to keep pace with a game as fast as international Sevens.

“I also had hip surgery recently and it became quite a fight to keep up. Also, finishing off your career at the Olympic Games, knowing you left while still being selected for a squad was always the ideal for me. So, I leave happy and, on my terms,” Dry explained.

“I am grateful for being there so long, but the younger guys in the system also need the opportunity to play and develop and you need to create that space for them. With the Commonwealth Games and next year’s Rugby World Cup Sevens on the horizon, the best time for that to happen is now and I will not be blocking the next guy coming through from that opportunity to develop on the international stage.

Finishing off at the Olympics felt right for the second most capped Blitzbok of all time (behind Branco du Preez) as he missed out on selection in 2016 for the Rio Olympics.

“After the previous Olympics there was always a push to be part of the next one,” said Dry. “But since 2018, after the knee injury that kept me out for a year, every tournament I played with this amazing team became a bonus and a blessing. So, everything in the last couple of seasons became extras, more than I expected.”

chris-dry-retires-from-international-sevens.jpg

Breakdown menace = Chris Dry

Dry said he saw himself as an all-rounder when he arrived in Stellenbosch for the first time.

“Defence became my biggest work-on from then on, because as our squad moved to become a more defensive-styled team my focus moved toward that. It is hard to recall a favourite tackle, but I recall once in Cape Town when we played Australia and they tried to outwork us, I made some good stops in defense.”

chris-dry-retires-from-international-sevens-1.jpg

HSBC Cape Town Sevens - Number One for Number One.

Dry hailed the HSBC Cape Town Sevens as the best tournament stop for the Blitzboks.

“It is our only opportunity to play in front of our family and our fans,” he said. “Cape Town is so special, the energy you get from the crowd is unbelievable.

“The Cape Town Stadium is just unbelievable as well, and to think we can sell it out twice in two days is just amazing. Port Elizabeth also had an amazing crowd with people driving hundreds of kilometres to come and watch, while the Dubai Sevens has also become a home away from home for the Blitzboks.”

The player ranked the 2016/17 squad as the best group he was part of. “We played in eight finals, winning five,” said Dry. “We were pretty much unstoppable that season.”

He also said both Blitzboks coaches in his career had a massive impact on him.

“Paul Treu took in this raw 15-a-side player and developed me and gave me the chance,” said Dry. “Neil Powell added to my skills and responsibilities and made me a player that could compete at the highest level. My two coaches from way back in Free State - Joe Beukes and Pine Pienaar – also backed me at the time.

“There are so many people to thank, but I have to name my family, my parents and brother and sister, who always supported me. The family made the real sacrifices. My parents made sure that I could chase my dream and never stopped working to make that possible. I always played for them. In the last couple of years my partner Jess Koster’s support was amazing, especially as she was stuck with me when I was on crutches and out for a year.

chris-dry-retires-from-international-sevens-2.jpg

"Chris always brought the gees" - Coach Neil Powell

Powell, who will guide the Blitzboks until next year’s RWC7s in Cape Town, said Dry’s durability in a tough sporting environment is testimony of his character and ability.

“He is everything that Sevens stands for - on and off the field,” said Powell. “His competitiveness and the standards he set and maintained at training sessions will be missed. The senior guy running in front and pulling the younger ones with him was a great attribute.

“His off-field contributions were even better; he drove our culture hard and was always ready and available to help anyone. He would aften sit with someone playing in the same position and talk through the technicalities and the demands of that position.”

Powell said Dry was one of the founding members of the current culture and value system in the squad and pushed hard for the idea that better people made better players.

“He is always positive, always has a smile, and he always brought the gees (spirit). He will be missed,” said Powell. “He had a such a brilliant career, despite the fact that he was always prepared to sacrifice his own ambition for the needs of the team.”

Powell wished Dry luck for the future. “You left the jersey in a better place and you will be missed in our system. We will honour and remember Chris for his years of service. All the best for the future.”

Sanzaar confirm re-arranged dates for 2021 Rugby Championship - Super Rugby | Super 15 Rugby and Rugby Championship News,Results and Fixtures from Sup...

sanzaar-confirm-re-arranged-dates-for-2021-rugby-championship-super-rugby-super-15-rugby-and-rugby-championship-newsresults-and-fixtures-from-super-xv-rugby.jpg

Rugby Championship administrators Sanzaar have confirmed the re-arranged dates for the Rugby Championship which will resume next month in Perth, Western Australia.

The match that was to be played this weekend on Saturday 28 August, has been rescheduled for 1400 (AWST) on Sunday 5 September at Optus Stadium, Perth, Western Australia.

SANZAAR confirmed that eight matches of the tournament will now be staged in Queensland after SANZAAR and the national unions were able to agree to suitable travel, accommodation and quarantine arrangements as regulated by the Queensland state government.

Unfortunately, this means there will be no matches played in New South Wales (Sydney and Newcastle), Australian Capital Territory (Canberra) or New Zealand (Auckland and Dunedin) as previously scheduled.

SANZAAR CEO Brendan Morris stated, “We thought last year was tough when we had to implement a Tri-nations tournament in Australia with South Africa absent due to the pandemic, but the current disruption caused by the ‘delta variant’ of COVID-19 has seen government authorities tighten up border bio-security measures substantially.

“This is totally understandable but after exploring several options, including moving the tournament to South Africa and even Europe, we now look forward with excitement to the remainder of The Rugby Championship in Queensland. Indeed, I am delighted on behalf of the SANZAAR stakeholders that we can now complete this world-class rugby tournament.”

“We are very excited about this unique format and rugby experience as we look to deliver a month of “Double Headers” with the world’s best players in Queensland, something never done in international rugby before.”

“On behalf of SANZAAR and the national unions, I would like to sincerely thank the Queensland Government for working with us and providing a travel, accommodation, training and playing environment that will allow us to safely complete the tournament. SANZAAR and the National Unions will now work closely with the states’ health authorities to ensure all bio-security measures are adhered to.”

“I personally want to thank Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young, as well as John Lee of the Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport, and their respective departments for their tireless efforts in supporting this tournament.”

“SANZAAR would also like to recognise the tournaments’ various commercial partners, our television broadcast rights holders and the fans for their patience and for their flexibility and understanding in this difficult time.”

Queensland Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the Palaszczuk Government had worked quickly with SANZAAR to put in place strict quarantine requirements for the 2021 Rugby Championship matches to go ahead in Queensland.

“The four international Rugby doubleheaders to be played in Queensland will take place under non-negotiable Covid-safe conditions for the safety of players and spectators,” Mr. Hinchliffe said.

“Queensland’s Chief Health Officer has insisted on stringent bio-security measures for the eight matches to be played in front of spectators at Suncorp Stadium, Cbus on the Gold Coast and Townsville’s Queensland Country Bank Stadium.”

“Although there’s plenty for Rugby fans in Queensland to be excited about, I want to make it clear the cost of relocating and quarantine for the remainder of the 2021 Rugby Championship is at the expense of SANZAAR.”

“While the relocation of the 2021 championship is a bonus for Rugby-loving Queenslanders, we know this tournament will also be a bitter-sweet experience.”

“Many Queensland fans continue to be concerned for the welfare of interstate family and friends in tough, ongoing lockdowns because of the pandemic’s Delta strain,” added Mr Hinchliffe.

On the re-arrangement of the Bledisloe cup match originally scheduled for 28 August, SANZAAR CEO Brendan Morris said: “It is great that we now have the final piece of the jigsaw puzzle in place following all the hard work that has been done recently to secure The Rugby Championship tournament. We now have all remaining nine matches in place and rugby fans in Perth can now purchase tickets with certainty to this block-buster Rugby Championship match.”

“Following the match, which is also the third Bledisloe Cup match between the two arch-rivals, both teams will move to Queensland where the remainder of the tournament will be staged from Sunday 12 September to Saturday 2 October, as announced by the Queensland Government yesterday.”

“SANZAAR would like to make special mention of the West Australian government and the management of Optus Stadium in Perth who have been very supportive of this fixture and have made it happen.”

The kick-off times for the remaining eight matches to be played in Queensland will be announced shortly.

South Africa has won 87% of their men’s Tests against Argentina (27/31) – the Springboks’ second-best win percentage against any country they have faced at least 10 times (93% v Italy).

South Africa have lost only one of their last 30 men’s Tests in Port Elizabeth (W26, D3), a 26-9 defeat to the British & Irish Lions in July 1974; the Springboks are undefeated in their 16 Tests in the city since then (W15, D1).

  • Argentina will be looking to avoid back-to-back defeats in Tests for the first time since September 2019, following their 32-12 loss to South Africa last time out.
  • South Africa are undefeated in their last four Tests in The Rugby Championship (W3, D1) – the last time the Springboks logged a longer unbeaten run in the competition was a five-match win streak across the 2008 and 2009 Tri-Nations campaigns.
  • Los Pumas have won only one of their last 10 Tests in The Rugby Championship (D2, L7), including the 2020 Tri-Nations; it came in the form of a 25-15 victory over New Zealand in November 2020.
  • South Africa have made fewer than five clean breaks in each of their last three men’s Tests, after doing so only once in their 16 matches prior.
  • Argentina collectively beat 22 defenders in Round 1 of The Rugby Championship 2021, the most by any team and three more than South Africa (19).
  • Lood De Jager won the joint-most lineouts (incl. steals) of any player in Round 1 of the 2021 edition of The Rugby Championship (6 – also Sam Whitelock) and double the tally of any Argentina player.
  • Julian Montoya made the most tackles (13/13) of any player without missing a single attempt in Round 1 of the 2021 edition of The Rugby Championship.
  • Aphelele Fassi has scored a try in each of his first two Tests for the Springboks, as well as providing one assist.

All Blacks won't travel to Perth for Rugby Championship - Super Rugby | Super 15 Rugby and Rugby Championship News,Results and Fixtures from Super XV ...

The New Zealand Rugby Union have confirmed that they have canceled plans to travel to Perth on Sunday for next week’s Rugby Championship and Bledisloe Cup match.

In addition due to the travel restrictions, they have also stated that the All Blacks’ two home Rugby Championship Tests against South Africa will not be played in New Zealand.

New Zealand Rugby CEO Mark Robinson said every effort had been made to keep the two Tests in New Zealand.

“We share the disappointment of our fans, players and other stakeholders, particularly those in Dunedin where the sold-out 100th Test between the All Blacks and South Africa was shaping up as a very special occasion.

“However, after discussions with Government, it is clear that the COVID-19 travel restrictions meant there was no way of bringing the South African and Wallaroos squads into New Zealand and we understand the importance of putting the health and safety of New Zealanders first.

Speaking on the decision to not have the All Blacks travel to Perth this weekend, Robinson said:

“Without complete certainty on the team’s next movements around The Rugby Championship we felt it was prudent for the team to stay put in New Zealand until SANZAAR have announced the full tournament schedule.

“Once the team leaves our shores, they currently can’t return until November 23 post their Northern Tour, so given the uncertainty, it makes sense to pause and get more clarity on these fixtures.

“We remain 100 percent committed to playing in the entire Fortinet Rugby Championship in 2021 and are working closely with SANZAAR to look at a range of options to reschedule these important matches.”

Tournament administrators Sanzaar say that they are: “currently working night and day with all stakeholders, and the tournaments’ associated commercial partners and rights-holding broadcasters, to find a suitable solution for the remaining matches. This also involves talks with the various government departments and health authorities to determine if suitable travel, accommodation and quarantine regulations can be implemented to allow the tournament to proceed in Australia.”

“SANZAAR is very disappointed that the New Zealand Rugby Union has made the decision not to travel to Perth at this time to play Australia for its second-round match . However, SANZAAR and the other national unions will continue to work on when and where this match can be played as part of the overall rescheduling work being done. SANZAAR also recognizes that this decision is incredibly disappointing for rugby fans in Perth.”

“The other second-round match, South Africa versus Argentina, scheduled for Saturday 21 August in Port Elizabeth will take place as scheduled. SANZAAR will announce the details of the venues and dates of the remaining nine matches when appropriate and will not enter into speculation until then.”

Several sources close to Sanzaar have revealed that the All Blacks v Springboks 100th match – which would have taken place in NZ this year – is now being planned for Twickenham due to the number of South African and New Zealand expats living in the UK who would be interested in attending the match.

Springboks leave South Africa for first time since 2019 - Super Rugby | Super 15 Rugby and Rugby Championship News,Results and Fixtures from Super XV ...

South Africa’s Springboks have left South Africa as a group for the first time since 2019 when they last played outside of their own country.

The Springboks departed for Queensland on Thursday for the away leg of The Rugby Championship in the hope of defend their title in the southern hemisphere showpiece.

The Rugby Championship was not contested in 2020 and last took place in 2019 and the Springboks won the last edition of the championship.

The team traveled from Nelson Mandela Bay to Cape Town early in the day where they will board a charter flight to Brisbane with the Pumas.

Jacques Nienaber’s charges kicked off their campaign with back-to-back victories against Argentina in Nelson Mandela Bay, after an encouraging start to the season in which they registered a victory against Georgia and clinched the lions Series after winning two of the three Tests against the British & Irish Lions.

The team will face Australia on Sunday, 12 September, at the CBUS Super Stadium in Gold Coast, which will be followed by another match-up between the teams at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday, 18 September.

These fixtures will be followed by back-to-back matches against New Zealand on Saturday, 25 September at QLD Country Bank Stadium in Townsville and Saturday, 2 October, at the CBUS Super Stadium in Gold Coast.

“The players had a few days off to rest mentally and recover physically from the demanding start to the season, so we are excited to make this trip to Australia and to get back onto the park for the next leg of the competition,” said Nienaber.

“When we arrive in Australia, we will be in quarantine for two weeks, although we will be allowed to train at specific times of the day, and then we enter a challenging block of four back-to-back Tests against Australia and New Zealand respectively, so it is important that we get back into our Test-week routine as quickly as possible.”

Despite entering a different time zone, Nienaber was confident that the team would be settled in and ready for action for the opening Test against Australia.

“We have two weeks to adapt to the time zone and conditions due to our mandatory quarantine period, and that combined with proper on-field preparations will bode well for the team before the first match,” said Nienaber.

“This extra time will also be valuable for the players nursing niggles to recover fully.

“All of the players should be available for selection for the first Test against, so the coaches will be in a good position in terms of squad selection when we begin our preparations for those matches.”

Nienaber said SA Rugby’s Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus would remain in South Africa for the opening stages of tour, and that he may join the team for the latter stages.

“Rassie has decided to remain in South Africa for now to allow the focus around the team to remain on The Rugby Championship and the team itself so that they can perform to the best of their ability on the field,” said Nienaber.

“He will continue to play active role in our team and coaches meetings throughout the tour, and schedule permitting, he may join us later on.”

The Springboks are currently at the top of The Rugby Championship standings after earning nine points in their first two matches, with the All Blacks in second place on five points after defeating Australia with a bonus point. Australia and Argentina have yet to get off the mark after failing to secure log points in their matches.
