We asked you to rate every Wallabies player out of 10 following their thrilling, but imperfect, win over France in the first Test of their three-match series.
Despite coming off the bench, Taniela ‘Tongan Thor’ Tupou was the standout amongst Roar readers – scoring an average of 7.61 out of ten. He was also the only player whose most common score was eight.
Marika Koroibete was adjudged the best of the run-on XV, scoring 7.34, while Harry Wilson was close behind on 7.13.
Will Genia, however, declared Michael Hooper his man of the match in his comments to The Roar.
“I thought Hoops was outstanding,” Genia told The Roar.
“His time in Japan, and seven weeks without playing, has worked to his advantage.
“He’s an elite performer and going to Japan will have been refreshing physically and mentally because it’s not at the same level of intensity as Super Rugby or Test rugby.
“Having played for ten years, that would have been amazing for his mind and body, to come back refreshed and ready to rip in.”
Genia added Hooper “sets the tone with his physicality, his breakdown work and his leadership.”
“You can see he’s a calm and composed guy regardless of the situation.
“He’s almost got no off switch when he’s on the field. His ability to go and go and go is phenomenal. That’s inspiring to his teammates. When you see your leader always making the efforts that people don’t notice on TV, pushing himself all the time, that’s what inspires the group in tough times.
“That’s what inspires a group to make those desperation plays at the end like a Tate McDermott play.”
Genia said Hooper’s decisive move to win a turn over in the first half that led to the Wallabies first try, summed up his desire.
“What he gets criticised for at times is not having the same presence on the ball as other open side flankers in world rugby.
“But his ability to get that turnover and have the presence over the ball to slow it down and give guys the opportunity to get the defensive line set, was something that stood out.”
